The world's largest medical database for ethical research

QRESEARCH

EMIS, together with The University of Nottingham, has developed QRESEARCH – the world’s largest medical database for ethical research.

QRESEARCH is a non-profit making venture involving regular contributions from more than 500 EMIS practices, representing around eight million patients.

The innovative QRESEARCH database automatically collects real-time data from EMIS systems across the UK, enabling it to quickly detect regional and national patterns of highly contagious diseases, and other conditions in a matter of hours.

The aim of QRESEARCH is to create a large volume database of quality primary care information for ethical medical research that improves patient care. The system follows professional guidelines on patient confidentiality, and practices can also get individual feedback on aspects of their data.

The system anonymizes and uploads practices’ clinical data to the central database. Then, to protect patient confidentiality, the data is further anonymized and the figures are totalled to produce data that is suitable for research.

QRESEARCH has been running for more than two years.
