Intelligent prescribing
EMIS contains an intelligent prescribing module and an integral drug database to make prescribing patient medication quicker and easier, with the added assistance of increased prescribing safeguards.
EMIS extracts information from a number of health sources to automatically take you to the drug you are prescribing, resulting in safer prescribing whilst saving you time. It will highlight relevant interactions, allergies and contra-indications at the point of prescribing, taking into account the individual patient’s medical history and current drugs.
Prescribing is intuitive to save time and prevent common oversights. For example, if you type ‘penici’ into the search, it will bring up penicillin first, as it is more commonly prescribed than penicillamine, which appears first in alphabetical lists. In addition, if you click penicillamine, a warning will appear to confirm whether you want to prescribe it.
Prescribing notes also appear at the point of selection for certain products such as those that have similar names, advice against generic switching due to bioavailability where appropriate and other brief warnings such as cytotoxic drug warnings including repeated dosage alerts.
Dangerous drugs and their recommended dosages are highlighted very clearly at the point of prescribing. For example, warnings appear in the system when prescribing Methotrexate or other cytotoxic drugs,
Graded warnings appear to identify the level of danger in each instance. Red indicates a very serious or dangerous warning, and blue indicates a less serious warning.
Drug database
The EMIS Drug Database is a very useful and powerful prescribing tool for physicians, as well as a thorough information source on drug products currently available.
Through the EMIS patching mechanism, the EMIS Drug Database is constantly updated by a dedicated team, incorporating changes taking place in the Canadian pharmaceutical market on a daily to weekly basis.
EMIS can be fully configured to the clinic drug formulary, enabling you to choose between branded and generic medication at the point of prescribing. Other formulary management features include the facility to allocate formularies to individual users, to create condition-based formularies, to stipulate a maximum daily quantity against a drug with a warning displayed if the daily quantity exceeds the maximum level and to display a separate stock indicator for dispensing clinics.
