Billing

The EMIS Billing Manager is a comprehensive solution for managing the billing process.

Fully integrated with the scheduling and EMR functions, the Billing Manager module enables billing transactions to be automatically extracted from patient information or diagnostic or procedure codes.

The module supports health plan, WCB and other third party billings including patient direct billing. Health plan billings are reconciled automatically through included features.

Central to the Billing Manager design is a rules engine which presents the most appropriate billing code given the context of the encounter. The billing rules engine operates on a combination of variables including age, gender, location of service, time of service etc to determine appropriate code options.

Sequencing is controlled by user preference with the default presentation being in descending order by billing code value. The rules engine is installed pre-loaded by province MSP but can be extended and refined through the interface provided and without programming.

The Billing Manager leverages the latest trends in user interface design including a Task Manager which can be customized to support clinical workflow. The Task Manager provides a summary of outstanding billings, billings which require clarifications, rejected billings and various other statistics, reminders and tasks to streamline the billing process. The Billing Manager approach is flexible to facilitate both physician-operated billing trigger at the signing of the clinical note and batch oriented billings completed by support staff or the physician after all or a portion of the days visits are complete.

Complex billings for hospital stays and group-based services can be easily achieved with EMIS. The Billing Manager module provides distinct billing screens just for these purposes. The hospital visits process is centred around a calendar where the patients admission and discharge dates are clearly visible. Icons indicate which days have been billed, the days where the patient was not seen, and days for which no indication is yet given. The complexity of billing code selection for the admission day, initial visit days and long-term stay days are supported by the billings engine to simplify the process and ensure accurate billings are applied.

Other key features provided with the module include:

  • simple input interface with extended prompting
  • comprehensive online help system
  • intelligent operation with other modules to eliminate re-keying
  • comprehensive billing inquiry options
  • standard reporting including required provincial reporting
  • automated loading of provincial billing codes
  • extensively user definable settings
  • customizable rules engine
  • protected audit trail
  • security controls.
