EMIS INC. EXPANDS CHRONIC DISEASE MANAGAMENT (CDM) SUPPORT
Additional CDM tools launched at Canadian National User Group
EMIS Inc. demonstrated today at the Canadian National User Group meeting a series of advanced chronic disease management (CDM) tools which will be available as integrated components of its electronic medical record (EMR), PCS. The tools, long used in the UK to enhance patient care, have recently completed testing for use within the Canadian market.
The CDM tools deployed as part of EMIS Inc.’s PCS are novel in that they are not only integrated components of the EMR itself, but that they support both real-time (synchronous) and batch (asynchronous) management of patients. Furthermore, they have the capacity to fully integrate in an automated way into the clinical and administrative workflows of how users interact with the EMR, thus enhancing their efficiency while also improving patient care.
The CDM tools include: Population Manager, an automated tool for interrogating a clinic (or clinics) database to identify populations of patients who meet specific clinical and/or demographic criteria as defined by the clinic; Protocols, a tool that enables clinics to allow the EMR to automatically undertake specific actions triggered by other EMR activity. For example, upon identifying a diagnosis for a patient, Protocols can automatically begin scheduling subsequent activities for clinic staff, placing orders, and assuring other activities are assured all without user intervention; and Patient Alerts, point of care popup alerts informing the clinician of the current patients’ chronic conditions and optimal care targets for that patient. An example of an alert may inform the clinician of a high cholesterol in a patient with heart disease even while the clinician is not accessing the EMR or the patient’s record.
According to Shaun O’Hanlon, M.D., Clinical Design Director of EMIS, “While current models of CDM in Canada are advancing care, they are largely fragmented and inefficient as they force the user to ‘step-out of’ how they use the EMR, which often times undermines the potential to affect care. As has been experienced in the UK, these tools are leading the world in enhancing care for chronic conditioned patients as a bi-product of their being an integral part of the fully codified EMR. We are excited to begin working with Canadian users on the adoption of the algorithms used in the UK here in Canada, as well as the implementation of Canadian-centric models of chronic care management.”
EMIS Inc. launched its Canadian operations in 2005, expanding on its success as the number one provider of EMR solutions in the UK and other countries. Since this time, EMIS Inc., headquartered in Edmonton, has become recognized in Canada as one of the pre-eminent solutions able to improve the health of Canadians and the daily activities of their providers through the use of a physician-centric, clinically based electronic medical record.
