Unique research tool leverages power of EMIS Inc.’s design to enhance care
EMIS Inc. announced today at the inaugural Canadian National User Group (CNUG) the plan for the initial deployment of Population Manager, an integrated component of its leading Patient Care System (PCS). Population Manager was demonstrated by Shaun O’Hanlon, M.D., Senior Clinical Architect at EMIS and Steve Edworthy, M.D., President of the Medical Doctors Electronic Record Association of Southern Alberta. Based on the PCS instance running at the Department of Medicine at the University of Calgary (part of the Calgary Health Region), the demonstration exhibited a user-derived clinical research-based interrogation of the PCS database which can immediately, and from behind the scenes, alert physicians to particular subjects of interests within their practice.
According to Dr. Edworthy, “We are very excited to be able to announce Population Manager’s imminent availability here in Canada. Following-on from work in the United Kingdom as exemplified in the recent announcement wherein a Population Manager search was able to identify upwards of half a million potentially un-diagnosed cases of Diabetes. We feel this capability is tantamount to our role as clinicians in Calgary to continue to enhance the care we deliver to the community.”
Leveraging the power of EMIS Inc.’s architectural commitment to an underlying standardized set of clinical codes, Population Manager enables users and researchers alike to search across a practice’s anonymized database for care patterns, or perhaps across an entire geography of disparate anonymized databases, such as Primary Care networks. This allows users to identify unique approaches to optimizing clinical outcomes for patients. Population Manager can also serve to allow organizations like the University of Calgary to participate in advanced clinical trial work for novel therapies.
