EMIS enables patient-physician collaboration through technology

Calgary clinic allows patients to self check-in upon arrivalh6>

Calgary, AB – 26 February 2010 – EMIS Inc. announced today that it has delivered the first of several phases of direct patient and physician collaboration through technology. This first phase includes the patient’s ability to ‘self-arrive’ via a kiosk directly linked to the practice’s EMIS EMR. This solution allows the clinic to cut waiting times in the reception area for patients, as well as free up clinic staff to focus on patient care activities.

The Family Health Clinic in Calgary is the first to deploy the solution. According to Dr. Norm Yee, physician lead for the practice, “Even before the system was turned on, we had some elderly patients wanting to use it. We expect the system to not only save us over $5,000 per year in administrative costs, but allow us to provide a greater patient-centric focus on care rather than administrative activities.”

The solution consists of a touch screen and interrogates the practice’s EMR in real-time to validate the patient’s appointment. After arriving themselves, the practice’s EMR is updated in real time so staff and physicians are aware of the patient’s presence.

According to Garth McDonald, Director of Technical Operations for EMIS, “Based on our structured and codified EMR, enabling technologies such as this is invariably a technical exercise, and requires little, if any, development effort for EMIS, which was the case here. This is an excellent example of how seamlessly and easily we can interface and coexist with other solutions which supplement the care delivery process, as a result of our EMR design.”

In the near future, EMIS will begin enabling available functionality within the system that will allow the practice to survey patients, and have the patients update information in their charts, such as recent smoking activity, exercise patterns, and the like. This same system is at the core of EMIS’ web-based and physician controlled online patient access system, allowing patients to review and update their records over the internet. Enabling this ‘personal health record’ is a phase of the project EMIS anticipates completing in the next few months.

“This is just the first step in our truly revolutionizing care for our patients. With the additional functionality we are preparing to turn on in the coming weeks and months, our patients are going to see entirely novel and convenient ways of collaborating with their physicians,” Dr. Yee added.

The software powering this capability is provided by a long-standing strategic partner of EMIS’ in the UK called Patient Access Electronic Records System (PAERS). In the UK, this system has been available for several years, and is widely exploited to improve the efficiency and quality of care for patients.

EMIS is beginning to work with all of its clients to deploy the solution in their environments as well in the coming months.
